The Development

A brief description of the story so far…

Five years ago, whilst talking to some friends over a drink at the Otley Beer Festival, it was suggested to us that Otley was in need of an ‘Independent Real Ale Freehouse’. I had often wondered why there was not a ‘Fanny’s’ or a ‘Blind Jacks’ or a ‘One Eyed Rat’ in Otley. Linda (my partner), got the idea firmly in her mind and the search began.

Two years later, after a couple of failed attempts at auction, we finally purchased a lovely old building within our budget and right at the heart of Otley. The building was in a very poor state of repair, but, with a passion for both Real Ale and Old Property Renovation, it seemed like the perfect project.

The next 18 months were taken up with various planning applications, listed building consents and licensing applications, which were granted at appeal, and work could begin in earnest. With the help of my father (David), and under the supervision of Linda, we began the process of lovingly restoring the building back to its original beauty, including exposing original features such as the fireplaces, stone flag floors, stone mullioned windows and datestone. All of this whilst also transforming the building into a working pub.

After 2 years of restoration, ‘The Old Cock’ opened its doors to the public on the 9th September 2010, to open the latest chapter of this buildings history.
